Top Things To Do in Madeira in 2022

Even if Madeira is a small island, it is full of amazing attractions. This ancient volcanic Portuguese island is truly the pearl of the Atlantic. Additionally, by visiting Madeira, you will truly be able to breathe, and reconnect with mother nature. So if you're eager to know what things you can do in Madeira, Portugal, then you've come to the right place!

1. Stroll in the city of Funchal.

Let's start the list of things to do in Madeira by mentioning its capital, Funchal. It is a vibrant city, full of incredible places to explore. What is there to see in Funchal? I recommend you visit Santa Catarina Park, Quinta Vigía residence, Funchal's port and Sao Tiago fort. By doing so, you will come across Frederico de Freitas house museum, tropical gardens and astonishing buildings made of volcanic stone. You'll also have the chance to visit Sao Lourenco Palace, Funchal Old Cathedral, Dos Lavradores Market and the Old Town. The latter has facades that have kept their ancient charm, especially in Santa Maria district. You should also know that in this neighborhood, the doors were painted by local street artists. Furthermore, the Old Town houses numerous bars and restaurants that serve amazing cocktails and local dishes.

2. Step inside Miradouro do Cabo Girão.

Located in the south of Madeira, Cabo Girão is a belvedere that has been converted into a skywalk. It is also a 580 meters in height glass platform that allows you to appreciate the highest cliff in Europe. Cabo Girão is a free view point from which you can also appreciate the green forms of Madeira and Camara de Lobos. Also, as Cap Girao is close to Funchal, I invite you to return there at the end of the day to enjoy the capital's vibrant nightlife.

3. Admire Madeira from the Pico Dos Barcelos Viewpoint.

Located 355 meters above the sea, this place offers a panoramic view of the whole island and the ocean on the horizon. Once there, just turn your head to the left and you'll see Igreja de Santo Antônio. It is a beautiful church with atypical black and white roofs. On the other side, you'll find Igreja de São Martinho. It is another church with a large tower dominating the hill against the backdrop of the ocean.

4. Swim in Praia Formosa.

Located a few kilometers from the center of Funchal, Praia Formosa is the largest beach in Madeira. It is also one of the most visited places in Madeira and the fashionable district of Funchal. Additionally, Praia Formosa houses residencies of famous Portuguese icons such as Christopher Columbus and Cristiano Ronaldo. Moreover, the beach is made of gray sand, typical of volcanic islands. So just go there to swim, enjoy the sea breeze, admire the sunset and have fun!

5. Visit the Miradouro Eira do Serrado.

Located 1058 meters above sea level, Eira do Serrado is a must-see attraction in Madeira. This place offers a breathtaking view on the village of Curral das Freiras. Additionally, I recommend hiking from the Eira do Serrado viewpoint. There, you'll find numerous trails that will immerse you more into nature.

Now you are ready to try the best things to do in Madeira. I wish you a wonderful journey full of surprises and sensations. Don't hesitate to share with me your thoughts about the best activities to try in Madeira and your overall experience. I look forward to reading your comments!
